Friday Scoop: Nancy Pelosi
The big story…
Nancy Pelosi Elected Speaker of the House
Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., was officially elected the new House Speaker on Thursday, winning the majority of the vote by the House of Representatives on the first day of the 116th Congress. As House speaker, Pelosi is expected to regularly face off with President Trump and preside over a newly energized Democratic majority that will likely challenge Trump’s every move.
One of the major challenges Pelosi will face first is budgeting for Trump’s long-promised border wall that brought Democrats and Republicans to a head, leading to the partial government shutdown. Late Thursday night, the new Democratic House passed bills that would reopen the government without paying for Trump’s border wall. However, the White House is drafting a veto threat leaving the shutdown nowhere near resolved.
