Monday Morning Scoop: Arike Ogunbowale Had A Weekend
Arike Ogunbowale’s Weekend Was Better Than Yours
Notre Dame’s Arike Ogunbowale hit game-winning buzzer beaters in the semi-final on Friday night and in the National Championship game last night, giving her school the women’s college basketball title in thrilling style.
Against heavy favorites UConn — who came into the semi-final game with a 36-0 record — Ogunbowale hit a jumper as time expired in overtime to give the Irish a 91-89 win. Last night, Easter Sunday, she struggled throughout the game until nailing an arching three-pointer from the corner to finish off Mississippi State, the team who knocked out UConn last season with a last-second shot.
“To do that twice in one weekend, the biggest stage in college basketball, it’s crazy,” Ogunbowale told ESPN after the game.
On the men’s side, Michigan ended the Cinderella run of Loyola Chicago and Sister Jean, while Villanova routed Kansas to set up tonight’s championship game. But it’s unlikely that the final will produce anything as dramatic as Ogunbowale’s incredible weekend.

Turmoil Over Stephon Clark’s Shooting Death Continues
The killing of unarmed black father Stephon Clark last month by police continued over the weekend, and kept tensions high in the California capital of Sacramento. An independent autopsy ordered by Clark’s family found that he was shot at least 10 times — taking seven bullets in the back — and may have been alive for up to 10 minutes after officers stopped firing.
The Washington Post reports, “That conflict came to a head Saturday night when a sheriff’s department cruiser struck a protester, causing the demonstration to erupt into pandemonium that threatened to boil over.”
Despite the protests and tension, there seems to be small signs of progress: only two arrests have taken place despite numerous public protests, an education fund has been launched for Clark’s children by the Sacramento Kings and Mayor Darrel Steinberg, and there has been praise for the way Sacramento Chief of Police Daniel Hahn — the city’s first black police chief — has dealt with the situation so far.

Was SUV Crash That Killed Family of Eight Intentional?
Preliminary findings in the case of an SUV containing a family of eight from Washington state found that the vehicle stopped on a overlook before accelerating over a cliff and plunging into the rocky waters of the Pacific Ocean.
The vehicle was discovered on March 26, and multiple reports indicate that a warrant for a felony had been served at the family’s home last Thursday, March 28. It’s not clear when the SUV was driven off the cliff.
According to KGW8, “the crash killed married couple Jennifer and Sara Hart, as well as three of their adopted children; 19-year-old Markis Hart, 14-year-old Jeremiah Hart and 14-year-old Abigail Hart. The other three children; 12-year-old Sierra Hart, 16-year-old Hannah Hart and 15-year-old Devonte Hart, are considered missing. However, Mendocino County Sheriff Tom Allman said they have ‘every indication to believe’ all six children were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash.”
President Trump Doesn’t Seem to Know What Community Colleges Are
On Thursday, President Donald Trump gave a speech to Ohioans on infrastructure, and offered numerous comments that made it seem as though he does not know what community colleges are.
He compared community colleges to vocational schools, even though they are not the same. Community colleges are usually two-year schools that often offer associate’s degrees. They have many of the same kinds of courses that a four-year university would, but at a lower cost. Vocational schools, also known as trade schools, provide hands-on learning for those going into a specific career, such as electrician work, mechanics or cosmetology.
