Weekend Roundup: Comey, Syria, NBA, ACM
A weekend filled with big news started late Friday night when an unusually somber President Trump announced that U.S., French and British forces were in the midst of carrying out airstrikes against Syria as punishment for a chemical weapons attack. Close Syrian ally Russia reacted angrily to the military action, but many experts do not expect a military response.
The NBA playoffs started this weekend, with some blowouts and one surprising upset, while the Academy of Country Music Awards struck a somber tone, remembering the Las Vegas massacre.
Seven inmates were killed and 17 injured in a riot at a South Carolina prison early this morning, while many were still dissecting the flurry of statements from former FBI Director James Comey (more on that below).
Ex-FBI Chief Comey Unloads on Trump in Interview
Former FBI Chief James Comey said in his first interview since President Trump fired him that removing special counsel Robert Mueller would be a massive mistake and that he thought it was possible that the have compromising information on the president.
CNN reports, “The comments came during a wide-ranging, exclusive interview with ABC News chief anchor George Stephanopoulos. The media appearance is the first time Comey has sat for a televised interview since Trump fired him last year. It also kicks off a promotional tour that the former FBI director is embarking on to promote the release of his new book, A Higher Loyalty.”
Comey added that he believes Trump is “morally unfit to be president,” while Trump took to Twitter to rage that Comey “will go down as the WORST FBI Director in history, by far!”

Last But Not Least: Pass the ‘Mayochup’
Heinz created a Twitter poll this week asking users if they would want to see Mayochup in U.S. stores. The company agreed to sell it if 500,000 people voted in favor of the condiment. The poll now has nearly 850,000 votes in total.
While it’s still only a potential product, Mayochup is a blend of Heinz brand mayonnaise and ketchup to be sold in a convenient bottle. It’s already sold in some middle eastern countries, but the company is gauging U.S. interest.
Brooklyn Riepma reports on how Twitter reacted.
