Monday Scoop: Weekend Update
Here’s What Happened Over the Weekend
We keep up with the news over the weekend, so you don’t have to. Here are the biggest stories from Saturday and Sunday.
- It was a bad weekend for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh (see details below). As well as a second accusation against him, officials agreed to terms for Christine Blasey Ford to testify this week.
- It was a good weekend for Tiger Woods (see details below).
- Floodwaters from Hurricane Florence slowly receded in North Carolina — where dead fish covered parts of a major highway — but South Carolina faced new threats as rivers began to crest.
- Observers pondered whether a judge will send 81-year-old comedian Bill Cosby to prison for a 2004 sexual assault conviction. His sentencing hearing is today.
- One part of a Federal Aviation Administration plan released Saturday made headlines: Congress might establish minimum airline seat sizes, to stop shrinking legroom issues.
- And the Virginia Tech football team probably hopes they never have another weekend like this one: They lost to 0-3 Old Dominion (who’ve only had have a football team since 2009), dismissed star defender Trevon Hill for a behavioral violation, and to top if off, dropped out of the top 25.
Kavanaugh Faces Second Assault Allegation
Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and the White House both denied an allegation made Sunday by a second woman accusing him of inappropriate sexual behavior.
The New York Times reports, “California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, called for an immediate postponement of Kavanaugh’s confirmation proceedings in a letter to the committee’s chairman, Iowa Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley, and asked that the new allegation be referred to the FBI for investigation.”
The second accuser, Deborah Ramirez, said Kavanaugh exposed himself to her at a dormitory party at Yale where they both attended school. While the chairman plans to look into new allegation, but there is no immediate plan to delay the Thursday hearing.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST: Tiger Woods Completes Five-Year Comeback With Tour Championship win
It had been five years and one month since Tiger Woods last won a PGA Tour event when he teed off in the final round of yesterday’s season-ending Tour Championship. In between he’d endured a nightmare of drug problems, a high profile breakup with skier Lindsay Vonn and four back surgeries.
It must have felt awfully good for him, then, as he kept his nerve yesterday and won the tournament against the 40 best players on the tour. He finished at 11-under-par for a two-stroke win, his 80th all-time, and told ESPN the whole thing felt “surreal.”
His breakthrough came at a great time for U.S. golf. They head into the Ryder Cup in France this weekend and Woods is part of the team.
