Monmouth University has Suspended its Entire Sorority and Fraternity System

Students at Monmouth University are saying goodbye to Greek life indefinitely.

The private college located in West Long Branch, N.J. just announced that they are suspending the entire Greek life system due to a series of serious conduct violations. Among those are hazing, alcohol, drug use, and overall lack of academic focus.

On Thursday, a letter was released to the campus community by Monmouth University president, Grey Dimenna, referencing a negative culture as “casting a long shadow over Greek life at Monmouth.”

University officials at Monmouth met with Greek organization leaders in May to press the concern of negative behavior surrounding their community. According to Dimenna, students were asked to draft a proposal on how to eliminate the issues discussed. The plan they submitted fell short of expectations, ultimately leading to the suspension of their entire Greek system.

Monmouth’s decision comes amidst a national effort to clean up Greek life, following a series of student deaths related to fraternity hazing and alcohol abuse. The North-American Interfraternity Conference recently voted to ban hard alcohol in most fraternities across the country.

Dimenna believes that the students can develop an improved Greek community, but they must be willing to rise to the challenge.
