Thursday Scoop: Missouri, Iran and the Mayor of NYC
Here’s Your Morning Scoop.
It’s Thursday, May 16, 2019, and Iran, abortion laws and Democratic presidential candidates are in the headlines. Here’s what you need to know.
Tensions escalate: Iranian officials denouncedsanctions imposed by the Trump administration this morning. “We believe that escalation by the United States is unacceptable and uncalled for. We have exercised maximum restraints,” Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Zarif said, according to the Associated Press. Zarif did say the Iran is committed to an international nuclear deal.
More abortion law changes. Missouri’s Senate passed a strict anti-abortion bill Thursday, which would outlaw nearly all abortions at eight weeks of pregnancy. In a statement, lawmakers Dave Schatz (pictured, left) and Caleb Rowden said, “This comprehensive, life-affirming legislation prohibits abortions once a heartbeat has been detected… and would outlaw abortion in Missouri upon the reversal of Roe v. Wade.”
| Another hat in the ring. New York City mayor Bill de Blasio announced early this morning that he is running for president, expanding an already crowded Democratic field. The New York Times reports “No sitting mayor has been elected to the presidency, and if Mr. de Blasio is to be the first, he must overcome daunting deficits in polls and fund-raising.” |
