Tuesday Morning Scoop: History Behind the Wheel

Welcome to the Morning Scoop for June 5, 2018. We’re thinking about history being made in Saudi Arabia and President Trump using the NFL as a political football. And also, is Apple Music free now?

Oh, and since you’re here: could you please share the Morning Scoop with one person? Just send this link and say something about these college students who are crazy enough to want to be journalists 🙃 https://bit.ly/2nfDZQ9

Saudi Arabia Issues First Drivers Licences to Women

This is big news (Image: Gulf News/Twitter)

Getting ahead of the curve, Saudi Arabia issued drivers licences to 10 women yesterday, several weeks before the kingdom officially lifts its ban on female drivers.

The government began replacing officially issued international licenses held by women, swapping them for Saudi-issued ones, according to a statement from the official Saudi Press Agency.

The Guardian reports: “women across the country have been preparing for the right to drive on June 24th by taking driving courses on female-only college campuses. Some are even training to become drivers for ride-hailing companies such as Uber.”

Former Trump Campaign Aide Accused of Witness Tampering

Special Counsel Robert Mueller has accused ex-Trump campaign aide Paul Manafort of urging people to lie for him in court.

CNN reports, “One of the witnesses told investigators recently that Manafort wanted them to commit perjury about a lobbying effort they worked on for him in the US, the filing said.”

Manafort is out on house arrest after posting $10 million in bail. He will go on trial in Virginia in late July and in Washington, D.C. in August. He has entered not guilty pleas in both cases.

President Trump Says Super Bowl Champion Eagles Aren’t Welcome at White House

President Trump canceled an official visit to the White House for the Philadelphia Eagles yesterday, citing the dispute over whether NFL players can protest during the National Anthem.

In a statement, Trump said that some members of the Eagles “disagree with their President because he insists that they proudly stand for the National Anthem, hand on heart, in honor of the great men and women of our military and the people of our country.”

Multiple sources reported that no member of the Eagles actually kneeled during the anthem last season.

Last But Not Least: March For Our Lives Announces Summer Tour

This summer, the March For Our Lives team will hit the road. Starting on Friday, June 15, the Parkland teens will join the Peace March in Chicago.

“Our first stop is in Chicago, where we’ll be joining the Peace March on June 15th,” the March For Our Lives coordinator said in an email. “From there we are traveling from city to city, focusing on places where the NRA has bought and paid for politicians who refuse to take simple steps to save our lives.”
