Trump Dealing With Russia Fallout
After meeting with Russian president Vladimir Putin on Monday, President Trump refused to agree with the US government’s assessment that Russia interfered in the 2016 US presidential election. And the reaction to his statement was swift and strong, from both sides.
Republicans Jeff Flake and John McCain blasted the president’s statements, while Trump stood firm on his belief that cooperation, not investigation, is the best plan to move forward, tweeting, “As I said today and many times before, “I have GREAT confidence in MY intelligence people.” However, I also recognize that in order to build a brighter future, we cannot exclusively focus on the past – as the world’s two largest nuclear powers, we must get along!”
Amazon Website Flips Out on Prime Day
Amazon’s Prime Day — the retail giant’s version of Black Friday in July — didn’t get off to the best start for some shoppers yesterday, as the company’s website experienced problems all across the US, with some users seeing nothing but dogs.
Some Amazon workers in Europe went on strike yesterday, in an attempt to highlight stressful and unfair working conditions. The company’s founder, Jeff Bezos, may not have noticed, since he was busy being the world’s richest human ever.
California Democratic Party Endorses Dianne Feinstein’s Rival
The California Democratic Party voted to officially endorse Los Angeles state legislator Kevin de Leon in the U.S. Senate campaign against senior Senator Dianne Feinstein, who has been in office since 1992.
De Leon, who is the current president of the California State Senate, is running on a progressive platform that includes a Medicare-for-All single-payer healthcare system, tuition-free and debt free public higher education, legalization of cannabis, and investments into renewable energies. Last But Not Least: The Importance of Diversity at College Journalism Workshop
The College Media Mega Workshop, which ran from July 12-15 at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities, had a common theme among all of its sessions: diversity of newsroom employees and the stories they cover being the lifeblood of a solid publication.
As CMN’s Nia Tariq writes in her takeaways from the workshop, “the program was chock-full of keynote speakers and panelists who encouraged the representation of different perspectives at every avenue of not only the reporting process, but also the hiring and production processes.”
