Tuesday Scoop: Trump Financial Troubles
It’s Tuesday, May 21, 2019. President Trump, Taiwan and the Golden State Warriors are in the news this morning. Here’s what you need to know:
Democratic win. A federal district judge ordered the accounting firm Mazars to turn over records on Donald Trump from before he was president to the Democratic-controlled House Oversight Committee.
CNN reports, “In a 41-page opinion, Judge Amit Mehta of the DC District Court dealt a significant blow to the White House as he rejected Trump’s attempt to block the committee’s subpoena, asserting that Congress is well within its authority to investigate the President.” Mehta’s decision will likely be considered by other judges as Trump and his Cabinet attempt to keep Congress from getting the President’s business records through other means.
Making history. The Taiwanese Legislative Yuan legalized same-sex marriage equality for LGBTQIA+ couples, making the Pacific island country the first country in Asia to do so. Passed by 66 to 27 votes, the majority of the center-left liberal Democratic Progressive Party voted in favor of gay marriage legalization, as did other smaller progressive political parties.
Dubs roll into finals. The Golden State Warriors rallied to beat the Portland Trail Blazers in overtime last night, sweeping the Western Conference Finals and securing the Dubs fifth straight trip to the NBA Finals. They are the first team since the 1966 Boston Celtics to make five straight finals. They will will meet either the Milwaukee Bucks or Toronto Raptors.
