Trump-Backed Candidate Set for November Showdown in California
Republican John Cox won a primary in California yesterday, setting up a contest with Democratic Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom in the gubernatorial election in November, in one of eight big primary elections held yesterday.
CNN reports, “Cox, a San Diego businessman, was endorsed by President Trump. Republicans feared they could be shut out of the governor’s race in November, which could have depressed GOP voter turnout and adversely affected the party’s congressional candidates.”
Elsewhere, Deb Haaland won New Mexico’s Democratic nomination, putting her on track to be the first Native American woman in Congress.
Fashion Designer Kate Spade Takes Her Own Life
Kate Spade, fashion icon and visionary designer, was found dead yesterday morning in New York. The New York Police Department reported that she hung herself with a scarf in her Park Avenue Apartment. She was found by her housekeeper at the scene.
Spade started in New York in 1993 and opened her first shop in the city three years later. Their are more than 140 Spade retail shops and outlet stores across the United States, and 175 stores internationally.
Erin Whitten and Danielle Germain rounded up the story for CMN.
Volcanic Eruption Kills Dozens and Leaves Hundreds Missing in Guatemala
Emergency crews are still on the ground in Guatemala in search for missing persons affected by the eruption before the 72 hour window to find survivors starts to close. Over 3,000 people have evacuated from the affected area but there are still hundreds yet to be found.
The high temperatures of 36 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) that remain in the lava and ash make it difficult for emergency crews to look for people in some areas with the lava and ash several feet high.
Emergency crews hope to find as many people as possible before the threat of rain becomes a reality, which would create a toxic sludge of ash and lava.

Last But Not Least: Florida State Wins NCAA Softball Championship
The Seminoles swept the University of Washington in the best-of-three NCAA softball tournament championship yesterday, delivering the first ever softball title for the school. Florida State followed up Monday’s 1-0 win with an 8-3 thrashing of the Huskies yesterday.
The Seminoles became the first team in Division One history to win the title after losing on the first day of the NCAA tournament.
