Wednesday Morning Scoop: Roseanne Redux

Welcome to the Morning Scoop for May 30, 2018. This morning, we’re pondering how much things can change in the few minutes it takes to send a tweet or when you are just driving in a thunderstorm. And we want you to think about sending this Morning Scoop signup link to one friend. That’s seems pretty easy, right?

Roseanne’s Tweet Causes Massive Fallout

In the time it takes to send a tweet… (Image: ABC TV)

What was supposed to be a triumphant second comeback season for the cast, crew and stars of “Roseanne” changed abruptly yesterday afternoon, after the show’s star, Roseanne Barr, tweeted a racist comment about Valerie Jarrett, former top adviser to Barack Obama.

ABC president Channing Dungey — the first African-American woman to head a major broadcast network —  announced the show was cancelled a short time later. “Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show,” she wrote in a statement.

The revived show got huge ratings in its first season back and the show was already starting production on its second season before Barr’s tweet.

Barr initially apologized, and then said she was leaving Twitter. She didn’t, though, firing up a series of tweets last night in which, among other things, she apologized to “all the wonderful writers (all liberal) and talented actors who lost jobs on my show due to my stupid tweet.”

Missouri Governor Resigns Amid Scandals

Missouri Governor Eric Greitens announced his resignation yesterday, as a series of scandals that have plagued his administration threatened to engulf it completely.

CNN summarized the situation: “The Republican governor has been embroiled in controversy after facing accusations of sexual misconduct and misusing a charity donor list. In recent months, Greitens had been indicted on a felony computer-tampering charge related to the donor list and on a felony invasion of privacy charge.

Mike Parson, the current lieutenant governor, will likely assume the office, per state law.

Uber Seriously Stepping up Safety Game

Uber passengers may now be noticing a feature called the “Safety ToolKit” in their apps, containing a list of trusted contacts to alert about your travel plans. In the coming months, the app will offer a similar safety tool to dial law enforcement directly.

Erin Whitten has the details in her CMN report.
