Republican Party, Trump Claim Victory in Closely-Watched Ohio Primary
Republicans have declared victory in a special U.S. House election — that remains too close to call this morning — in a solidly red congressional district in Ohio. President Trump basically took credit for the win on Twitter late last night.
The Washington Post reports, “The race was the latest example of increased Democratic energy and tepid Republican candidate performance that has defined recent special elections, including House races in Arizona and Pennsylvania and a Senate race in Alabama.”
Republican state Sen. Troy Balderson received over 1,700 votes more votes than Democrat Danny O’Conner, a very slim margin of less than one percent, with thousands of provisional votes still outstanding. President Trump took the district by 11 points during the 2016 presidential election.
First Muslim Woman Poised to Join Congress
In Tuesday’s District 13 primary race in Michigan, Rashida Tlaib won the Democratic nomination to run unopposed for a House seat, meaning she will become the first Muslim woman elected to Congress.
No Republicans or third-party candidates ran for the seat occupied by John Conyers, who stepped down in December after accusations of sexual harassment were leveled at him.
“This is a huge victory for the Arab and Muslim American communities — it’s also a huge victory for the city of Detroit,” said Sally Howell, director of the Center for Arab American Studies at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, according to the Associated Press. “Rashida Tlaib brings forward the legacy of John Conyers in terms of the groundbreaking role he played in Congress and his commitment to civil rights.”
Smith College Incident is Latest Case of Racial ‘Profiling by Proxy’
Smith College has opened an investigation into a July 31 incident in which a staff employee called campus police on a black student who supposedly “seemed to be out of place.” It turns out the student, Oumou Kanoute, who had a summer job with the college, was simply eating lunch in a common area.
This incident did not happen in isolation. It is just the latest in a string of cases referred to as profiling by proxy – instances where police are summoned to a situation by a biased caller.
Three university professors examine this trend in a guest post by the Conversation.

Last But Not Least: Brawl in Brooklyn Nail Salon Sparks Racial Tensions
A video of nail salon workers physically assaulting African American customers went viral over the weekend.
The post on Facebook has racked up 800,000 views and counting since Friday, bringing dozens of protesters outside the doors of the salon on Monday night.
CMN’s Hailey Nagma examined the developments in her report published last night.
