Wednesday Scoop: Nightmare in Indonesia
Death Toll Rises Sharply in Indonesia
Residents of Palu, Indonesia faced a fifth day with little clean water or food as the death toll rose following a devastating hurricane and subsequent tsunami last Friday.
CNN reports, “The number of people killed rose to 1,234 on Tuesday, Indonesia’s national disaster agency said, including Monday’s grim discovery of 34 bodies, mostly children, in a church recreation hall in Sigi Biromaru south of Palu.”
Upwards of 61,000 people have been displaced and the number of deaths is expected to increase. To make matters worse, a volcano erupted in the area early this morning, sending ash and smoke into the air, which could impact efforts to get aid into the area.
Trump Mocks Kavanaugh Accuser
At a rally in Mississippi last night, President Trump mocked Christine Blasey Ford’s testimony on Capitol Hill last week, emphasizing her inability to remember details about the high school party at which she said Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her.
“‘What neighborhood was it in? I don’t know,’ Trump said at the rally. ‘Where’s the house? I don’t know. Upstairs, downstairs, where I was. I don’t know. But I had one beer. That’s the only thing I remember. And a man’s life is in tatters’ Trump said, per the Guardian.
Meanwhile, the New York Times released the results of an investigation that found the president, who often claims he is self-made millionaire, mostly got rich on his dad’s money. And perhaps questionable tax schemes.
Three Universities Allow Students to Use Apple Products as Student ID
This week, Alabama, Duke and Oklahoma announced the integration of Apple products on campus which will allow students to use the Wallet app to pay for food and services and access on-campus buildings.
Students at the three universities can now access a variety of campus resources more quickly and efficiently. Student ID cards on a phone or Apple Watch open dorms, dining halls, libraries and fitness centers and pay for purchases anywhere that accepts a student ID. Apple users on campus can also enable Express Mode so that Touch ID or Face ID is not necessary to enter a building.
