Primary Upset: 10-Time Representative Toppled by Boston Progressive
In the latest upset to shake up the Democratic party, Rep. Mike Capuano has conceded defeat to Boston city councilor Ayanna Pressley in Massachusetts for a US House seat. Pressley is virtually assured of becoming the black women elected to Congress from Massachusetts.
CNN reports, “Pressley’s win comes less than three months after Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ousted the No. 4-ranking House Democrat, Rep. Joe Crowley of New York, in a primary.”
Neither candidate had hard feelings, with Capuano praising Pressley, and Pressley saying that both candidates would vote the same way, adding that her win is proof that Democrats need a new, more assertive style in the Donald Trump era.
Nike Ads Featuring Colin Kaepernick are (Literally) Under Fire
Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has been selected by Nike as one of the athletes promoting the company’s new “Just Do It” campaign. The campaign celebrates 30 years of the iconic Nike slogan.
Earlier this week, Kaepernick posted the advertisement on Instagram with the caption “Believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything. #JustDoIt”
But, as CMN’s Hailey Nagma reports, the backlash has been fiery.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel Will not Seek Re-election
In a surprising move that followed months of statements saying he would seek another term, embattled Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced he would not try to hold the office when his term ends in May 2019.
Emanuel left the White House (he was President Barack Obama’s chief of staff) to run for mayor, and won the 2011 election. The 2014 police shooting of Laquan McDonald sparked protests and the city’s murder rate has spiked during his tenure.

Last But Not Least: Actor Geoffrey Owens Responds to Job Shamers
Geoffrey Owens, best known for his role of Elvin Tibideaux on “The Cosby Show”, is thanking fans for their support after a photo of him working at Trader Joe’s went viral.
Last week an article by the Daily Mail revealed the actor was working as a cashier at a Trader Joe’s in Clifton, New Jersey. Photos snapped by a customer accompanied a headline that read: “From learning lines to serving the long line!” The article insultingly described Owens’ appearance on the job and even went as far as pointing out what his hourly wage might be.
On social media, people said they felt the article was job shaming Owens who was simply making an honest living for himself.
CMN’s Tamia Heard covered the story.
