VA Governor Northam Denies Racist Yearbook Photo

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam says he is neither of the two people in a racist photo found in his 1984 Eastern Virginia Medical School yearbook, but once darkened his face to look like Michael Jackson for a dance competition in 1984. CNN reports, “In a remarkable, hour-long news conference at the Governor’s Mansion in Richmond, Northam defended himself from the cacophony of calls for his resignation, but acknowledged that he had made mistakes on race in his past, like when he darkened his face for the dance contest.” The racist photo, which CNN acquired, shows two individuals — one in blackface and the other dressed in a KKK hood and robes. Many have urged Northam to resign but the governor says he is determined to win people over.

Celebrities Call on Fans to Unfollow ‘Fuck Jerry’

Several celebrities and comedians are calling on fans to unfollow the meme account “Fuck Jerry,” using the hashtag #FuckFuckJerry, saying that the account (and the corresponding marketing company) has built their reputation on stealing jokes and content without credit or permission. In response, Fuck Jerry has published a new content policy that is strictly permission only. But a lot of people are saying “too late,” and others are pretty peeved over the company’s involvement in Fyre Fest. (Still don’t know what happened at Fyre Fest? Read our review about the two documentaries that supposedly tell it all.)

Album Review: ‘A Star Is Born’ Original Soundtrack

On October 5, 2018 the fourth remake of the 1937 film A Star Is Born was released in theaters, and along with it, a powerful journey through music. In this reboot of A Star is Born — starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga — singer-songwriter Ally is discovered by country-rock artist Jackson “Jack” Maine. Instantly, almost instinctively, these two become as connected to each other as the audience becomes to their music. Their passion to each other is embedded in each lyric, making for a truly remarkable soundtrack. Read more in Romané Salazar’s review for CMN.
