Transgender Candidate from Vermont Makes History

Christine Hallquist will face incumbent Gov. Phil Scott in November (Image: Hallquist for Governor)

Christine Hallquist became the first transgender person nominated for governor by a major party with her win of the Vermont primary race Tuesday.

“Tonight we made history, and I’m so honored to be … part of this historical moment,” Hallquist said to her supporters at the election-night party in Burlington. “I’m so proud to be the face of the Democrats tonight.”

Hallquist will face Gov. Phil Scott in November, with CNN projecting Scott as the winner of the GOP primary. CMN’s Erin Whitten has more in her report.

Here are some other key takeaways from yesterday’s elections.

Report: 300 Catholic Priests Abused More Than 1,000 Children in Pennsylvania

A stunning report released by a grand jury yesterday concluded that Catholic clergy sexual abuse dating back to 1947 was widespread in six dioceses in Pennsylvania, and that senior officials ignored, covered up and dismissed evidence of the abuse.

From the report: “Priests were raping little boys and girls, and the men of God who were responsible for them not only did nothing; they hid it all. For decades. Monsignors, auxiliary bishops, bishops, archbishops, cardinals have mostly been protected; many, including some named in this report, have been promoted.”

Searching for Survivors, Answers in Italy Bridge Collapse

Rescue teams pulled bodies out of the twisted wreckage after a highway bridge collapsed in Genoa, Italy, yesterday. The death toll stands at least 39 people, and officials are searching for survivors who may be trapped.

35 cars and three trucks had been crossing the bridge at the time of the collapse, the cause of which is unclear. Government officials have called for safety checks of all major infrastructure across the country, while bridge experts have already begun examining possible causes for the failure of the structure.

Last But Not Least: In ‘BlacKkKlansman,’ Legendary Director Spike Lee Wakes up America

Director Spike Lee is back with his latest movie, which hit theaters almost one year after the Charlottesville Riots, and it has touched a nerve on race in America. “BlacKkKlansman” tells a true story about how Colorado Springs Police Department’s first African American police officer took down a local Ku Klux Klan group in the 1970s. It is based on the 2014 book “Black Klansman” by the officer himself, Ron Stallworth.

CMN’s Duane Paul Murphy saw the film and offers his insight in this review.
